Best Veggie Pizza Combinations

For vegetarian lovers of pizza, there are many more options than a plain cheese slice. No matter if you are looking for veggie pizza in Walnut Creek or New York City, there are plenty of delicious vegetable topping combinations that will make you forget all about pepperoni. Read on to learn about, and salivate over, some of the tastiest toppings you can grow in a garden.

For a simple, Meditteranean-inspired pizza, try chopped sun-dried tomatoes, olives, and goat cheese on a flatbread crust. This pizza nicely balances sweet, salty, and creamy flavors.

Fresh out of the oven, a fontina cheese, mushrooms, and roasted garlic pizza gets even better when you sprinkle it with grated parmesan cheese and chopped mint.

If you’ve never thought to mix breakfast foods and pizza this sweet potato, egg, and gouda cheese combination will change your mind. The cubed and pureed sweet potatoes make a little nest for the egg to cook in while the pizza bakes.

Pour the contents of your summer garden on a pizza and you get a delicious combination of pizza toppings: succulent tomatoes, thinly sliced zucchini, sweet corn kernels, and fresh herbs. It makes for a slice of pizza that makes you feel good about your healthy choices.

For adults who have grown to love the vegetables they hated as children, the unique combination of roasted brussel sprouts and red cabbage on pizza is a surprising treat. The slightly nutty flavor of the brussel sprouts is a perfect complement to the sweet and tangy flavor of the cabbage.

Though not a vegetable, fresh figs paired with parmesan cheese and arugula atop a pizza crust will still exceed the flavor expectations of any vegetarian. For extra zing, trade arugula for its even more peppery fraternal twin, wild roquette.

Also not strictly just vegetables but nonetheless tasty is the combination of vegetarian “sausage,” artichoke hearts, and pesto. Depending on the spice profile of the not-sausage, you can play with the type of pesto – kale, mustard greens, or traditional basil are all great options.

If you’ve never enjoyed a roasted zucchini blossom, try it as the star topping of a veggie pizza. You can pair it with a blend of cheeses and a drizzle of olive oil or with brown butter ricotta cheese. It will have you wondering what other sorts of flowers you can eat.  The key to the rich, layered flavor of this asparagus, pea shoot, and fontina cheese topping combination is in the sauce: instead of a red sauce, this pizza’s base is a mixture of goat cheese, olive oil, cream, dried oregano, salt, and ground black pepper. Its a lot of ingredients but you don’t have to be a caterer in Walnut Creek to pull it off and it is worth the extra-long grocery list.
